Allen Busch Koltun, 90, passed away peacefully in New Orleans on March 20, 2013 from heart failure. He is survived by his loving wife of 69 years, Fleurette Lurie Koltun, father of his loving children, daughter Fran Koltun Averett, son Dr. Douglas Koltun (Eila); and 3 adored grandchildren, Rachel, Benjamin and Sarah; his sister, Shirley Koltun Schiffman and her family. Son of the late Meyer Koltun and Rose Busch, Allen was predeceased by his oldest son Lawrence Koltun.
Mr. Koltun received his BBA from Tulane in 1943. He served as Commanding Officer of the USS SC1028 in the Pacific Theater during WWII. Afterwards, he returned to Tulane to earn his MBA in 1947. Allen was a practicing CPA for 52 years until his retirement in 1999. At the time of his retirement he was President of Koltun, Buckman and Ortiz, Ltd. Allen was Associate Professor of Taxation at Tulane’s Graduate School of Business teaching Tax Planning and Tax Research. He was a member of the American Institute of CPA’s Taxation Committee, Estates and Gifts Division and also the Small Business Division. He had published articles in the Journal of Accountancy, Management Services, and Taxation for Accountants. He was a member of the program committee for The Tulane Tax Institute, a lecturer on Taxation to various professional groups and institutes throughout the country.
He served as Chairman of the Louisiana Society of CPA’s Taxation committee, past president of the New Orleans Association of Business Economists, former Chairman of the Advanced Tax Program for the State Society and Louisiana Bar, a former executive committee member and President of Jeffreys Henry International, an international association of independent accounting firms. He was a past board member of the Jewish Welfare Federation, Anti Defamation League, the Jewish Children’s Regional Service and Hillel. He was Vice-President of the Jewish Community Center and served on the boards of Temple Sinai, Jewish Foundation, and Goodwill Industries. He was past president of the Tulane Naval ROTC Alumni Association and a charter member of the National World War II Museum.
Mr. Koltun had a long association with WYES public television. In the 1950’s when Tulane partnered with educational TV, Professor Koltun presented a series of televised Accounting Programs. Until the time of his death he was serving as a member of the WYES Advisory Committee. Memorial services will be held in the Feibelman Chapel of Temple Sinai, 6227 St. Charles Avenue on Sunday, March 24, 2013 at 2:00pm with Rabbi Edward Paul Cohn officiating.
